Course Synopsis: This course is suitable for investigators intent on learning how the forensic sciences are used in crime solving, and specifically how insects and arthropods are instrumental in the decomposition of bodies. The course will look at the interaction of certain types of insects at different stages of decomposition, and how the type of death, temperature, elevation and other physical conditions (ie, weather, soil, vegetation, humidity) determine which insects come into play. Case studies will be examined, as will a discussion on the conclusions that can be drawn from such evidence, how to determine time of death by insect infestation, and the roles of the crime lab, forensic specialist, and the private investigator.
